A common misconception about hydration and hair can partially be blamed on marketing. Thousands of products promise to hydrate and moisturize hair, when in reality they end up coating hair or pulling moisture away from it due to certain ingredients. This is particularly problematic with hair that is naturally curly, coiled or kinky because those hair types tend to need more authentic hydration instead of a product that simply gives the appearance of such. The same thing goes for hair that has been processed or bleached, because the strands typically have become more porous and are literally thirsty for hydration.
Hydrated hair is infused with actual moisture that penetrates the hair shaft, not just a sealant or coating on top of the shaft. The most effective way to achieve hydrated hair is with a water-based moisturizer. You can use products that contain water or aloe, even use these ingredients alone as your first step toward hydration.
The easiest and most accessible way to hydrate your hair is with a good conditioner. The best formulas partially absorb into your hair (as opposed to simply coating it) and help detangle your strands as they infuse each one with good-for-you ingredients. Once you’ve rinsed, lightly towel dry hair and immediately apply small amount of a hydrating product like a leave-in conditioner. This will continue the infusion process without weighing hair down. If you heat style, your leave-in should also be able to function as a thermal protectant… and is best formulated without alcohol or silicones. If you air dry, immediately seal in your hydration with a light nourishing hair oil. You can also use a few drops of oil as your last step for shine, after heat styling.
Between shampoos, maintain your hair’s hydration by either misting it with water or aloe before sealing with oil, or by using your leave-in conditioner as the first step. What product you choose as the first layer of hydration will depend heavily on your style maintenance and hair type. Choose what works best for you to keep your hair hydrated and healthy.
