START SKIN CYCLING

The practice of skin cycling has gotten a lot of buzz recently, but the truth is that it’s not a new phenomenon. Estheticians have been advising clients to cycle out their skin care for as long as the practice has been around. The idea is that instead of doing the same thing every day, you cycle out the more potent products (retinols, acids, and even super rich hydrators) every 2-3 days. This helps keep your skin at a higher response level to accept and absorb the products, instead of adapting to them due to consecutive use.

REDUCE YOUR LAYERS

If you think you need 10 layers of skincare for the most glowing results, you’ve (literally) been sold a bill of goods. When the K-beauty trend hit the United States, many people were under the impression that they needed between 7-10 products daily to truly harness skincare synergy. In reality, that excessive layering technique trend actually started in the united states, as a marketing ploy to sell consumers more products. K-beauty practices are a lot more pared down. Both trends start with thinner and watery layers at the base and heavier layers on the top, but K-beauty technique use less products to achieve that result. Plus, all that layering might end up doing your skin more damage. Estheticians warn that you can potentially suffocate your skin, create hot spots of inflammation, and even trigger acne flare-ups.

MIND YOUR LINENS

It would be a shame to meticulously execute your skin care ritual, only to lay your face on a dirty pillowcase. Keep your linens fresh and clean, to reduce potential contact with unwanted bacteria while you sleep. During the day, be just as mindful if you are wearing a protective mask. Toss (or wash reusable) old mask and trade them in for clean ones on a daily basis. If you dry your face with a towel (does anyone do that anymore?), be sure to switch it out daily as well.

Your 2023 glow up does not have to be complicated or expensive. It just has to work for you. Get started today instead of playing catch-up with the rest of the beauty-seekers on New Year’s day. Here’s to balanced, clear and glowing skin!
