INSIDE:
Spirulina is a type of algae that can be taken to enhance your overall health and wellness. Considered a superfood, Spirulina is packed with proteins, antioxidants, and has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.
One tablespoon of Spriulina contains:
- 8 milligrams (mg) of calcium
- 2 mg of iron
- 14 mg of magnesium
- 8 mg of phosphorous
- 95 mg of potassium
- 73 mg of sodium
- 0.7 mg of vitamin C
It also contains thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, and vitamins B-6, A, and K. Spirulina can improve gut health, lower blood pressure, manage diabetes, and help lower cholesterol. It might also help boost your metabolism. You can take spirulina in a little bit of water (okay a lot of water… like, 16 ounces), add it to smoothies or soups, or even sprinkle the powder on salads.
OUTSIDE:
Spirulina’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce swelling, acne and prevent further breakouts as well. It increases your skin’s metabolism which enables faster healing and also prevents bacteria overgrowth. Spirulina also contains chlorophyll, which can help reduce dark circles and spots on your skin.
For a quick DIY mask: add one teaspoon of spirulina to enough aloe gel to make a paste. Smooth onto clean, dry skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse and pat dry. Follow with an appropriate moisturizer (suited to your skin type).
